We are a Canadian registered charity with a volunteer-based Board of Directors that is legally
responsible for the governance of our organization. Within that mandate, our board develops,
implements, and monitors policies that allow our organization to carry out its work.
Board members are also the fiduciaries who steer an organization towards a sustainable future by
adopting sound, ethical, legal governance, and financial management policies, as well as by making sure
their non-profit has adequate resources to advance its mission.
We are fortunate to have so many skilled and caring individuals who serve as our Board Members. This
month we will feature Board Member, Dr. Janet Kelly.
Dr. Janet Kelly grew up in Peterborough. She received her medical training at Queen’s University in Kingston and went on to train as a Family Physician at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. She is currently a Fellow with the Canadian College of Family Physicians. Dr. Kelly has spent over 30 years working in Peterborough at the Medical Centre in Family Practice. Throughout that time, she has
enjoyed office practice, student health (at Fleming College), and a referral obstetric practice. In the last several years, she was affiliated with the Queen’s Medical School, Family Practice Teaching Program in a teaching role where she served as preceptor to Family Medicine Residents. In their spare time, Janet and her husband like to take in the cultural offerings in the city and enjoy the proximity to natural areas where they can pursue their interest in hiking, kayaking and cross-country skiing.
So why is a Doctor a Board Member of Community Care Peterborough?
Dr. Janet Kelly says being a doctor made her “aware of Community Care and the excellent services they
provided for their clients.” She states, “As I approached retirement from my medical practice, I was
naturally drawn to the Board of Community Care Peterborough as a way to continue in a helping role
while drawing on my medical knowledge.” Janet has been on Community Care Peterborough’s board for
four years. She holds the role of Director and is a member of the Governance Committee.
Dr. Janet Kelly’s interest in health and wellbeing has made her a vital board member, whose years of
medical knowledge helps the agency greatly.
