Health and Wellness

Overview

We are committed to our part in limiting the spread of the COVID - 19.  As an essential service, we will remain open and active, with the exception of the following in-person Health and Wellness programs: Blood Pressure, Foot Clinics, In-person (indoor) Falls Prevention and Exercise classes, Outdoor Pole Walking Instruction, Social Drop-In

Instead - we are now offering a variety of online exercise classes through Zoom.  


Falls Prevention and Exercise Classes

Exercise is the key to staying strong, energetic, and healthy as you get older, and it can even be fun, too!

We are currently unable to offer in-person classes in community centres and retirement homes because of the pandemic restrictions. However, we have a great line-up of classes you can take using Zoom.   Classes are offered free to residents of Peterborough County who are +55 years.  Donations to Community Care are most welcome.

  • Wellness Wednesdays
    •  Join us for an interesting line-up of sessions on Wednesdays from 1:00 - 1:45 p.m.o
      • May 5: Ageless Grace - a brain health program, promotes longevity of the body and the brain by supporting the neuroplasticity, making new neural pathways, in the brain. As a Certified Ageless Grace® Educator, Karin has learned that recent research shows that no longer is cancer or heart disease the greatest fear among the 60 + population. It is the loss of brain function! This program makes keeping one’s body and brain healthy and it as easy as child’s play. It is powerful and FUN!
      • May 12: All about Growing - Container Gardening (Sheila in consultation with a Master Gardener) and How to Take Great Pictures of Flowers.
      • May 19: Victorian Tea Cooking Show – Make a simple “high tea” at home to enjoy on the May 24th long weekend.  
      • May 26: Short Story Club – May is short story month. Let us know in advance if you plan to join and we’ll send you a short, short story. During the session we’ll discuss your impressions.

  • Pole Walking
    Walking poles help many people walk more comfortably because they take some of the strain off lower back, hips, knees and ankles. We have some good quality poles for sale. If you'd like help selecting the right ones and purchasing a pair, please contact Sheila through this link here.

We love seeing you in our classes and hope you enjoy the many benefits.  We offer these free classes to everyone +55 years throughout the City and County of Peterborough and we gratefully accept donations so that we may continue to do that.

Pole Walking - Canceled due to pandemic restrictions

Our Pole Walking groups in Ennismore, Lakefield and Buckhorn are cancelled because of group size limits for outdoor organized activities established by the Ontario Government. We will let you know when the groups are able to start-up again.

In the meantime, we encourage you to enjoy the benefits of outdoor exercise by walking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing or skating while physically distancing. 

If you'd like to borrow or buy a pair of walking poles, please contact the instructor, Michelle Holdforth.

 

Join Michelle for invigorating, physical distance exercise in the great outdoors. No registration required. Sanitized poles available or bring your own. Wear sturdy boots and dress for the weather. Some terrain may be snow-covered and uneven. Classes will take place on Dec. 28, 29, 30, 2020 and in January 2021.

Mondays         2:00 - 3:00 p.m.: Buckhorn - John Earle ChaseTrails

Tuesdays        2:00 - 3:00 p.m.: Chemung - Ennismore Heritage Trails (981 Ennis Rd)  (New location starts Jan. 5)

Wednesdays   10:00 - 11:00 a.m.: Lakefield - Speed Skating Oval Trails
