Every era of Meals on Wheels in Peterborough has been shaped by a compassionate voice, someone who quietly ensures the program stays grounded in care, connection, and community.
In the beginning, it was Elizabeth Janusz, whose vision brought the idea to life. Later, Bernice Clark carried it forward for 25 years, giving the service the stability and structure that allowed it to thrive. When Meals on Wheels became part of Community Care Peterborough, Gail Wilson and Patty Tipton guided the transition with grace, ensuring the heart of the program remained unchanged.
Today, that same spirit continues through Brenda Twaddell, Program Coordinator for Meals on Wheels and Grocery Shopping Programs. With eight years at Community Care and two in her current role, Brenda has become the warm, steady voice volunteers and clients alike have come to know.
“The people are what make it special,” Brenda says. “Every meal we deliver connects three people — the client who receives it, the volunteer who gives their time, and the staff who help it all come together. You can feel the kindness woven through every part of it.”
Brenda has watched the program grow to meet new needs; more clients, more meal options, more diversity. But at its core, she says, it remains the same. “Our volunteers go above and beyond with humble hearts,” she adds. “It’s their care that keeps everything moving.”
From Elizabeth to Brenda, the names have changed, but the compassion has not.
