Celebrating 60 Years of Meals on Wheels: No Fanfare Needed
August 21st, 2025

Barb Diceman doesn’t consider her story remarkable. But for nearly 40 years, she’s been a steady presence in the Meals on Wheels program—showing up, giving her time, and believing in the simple power of a hot meal delivered with care.

Her interest in the program began in 1980, when both of her parents needed support and began receiving meal deliveries in their own community. At the time, Barb lived two hours away and couldn’t be there every day—but Meals on Wheels could. “That convenient service made a real difference,” she recalls. Seeing the impact it had on her parents sparked a lasting interest in the program.

By 1986, she was volunteering regularly in Peterborough and serving on the Board of Directors of what was then an independent Meals on Wheels program led by Bernice Clarke. Barb took on publicity and program planning and delivered meals monthly with a partner. It was—and still is—a way of putting her values into action.

Barb’s commitment to food security has always extended beyond meal delivery. She continues to support local efforts that ensure individuals and families have access to healthy, affordable food. “It’s about dignity, respect, and hope,” she says—a philosophy that echoes in every tray she carries to the door.

Even today, Barb still delivers meals two to three times each week. She’s witnessed the program grow and change, but its heart remains the same.

Quietly, consistently, she’s made a difference in thousands of lives. She wouldn’t say so—but we will.
