Celebrating 60 Years of Meals on Wheels: From the Boardroom to the Front Door
June 12th, 2025

Years ago, Barb Thompson helped guide Community Care Peterborough through an important chapter in its history. As President of the Board of Directors from 2003 to 2005, she played a key role in welcoming Meals on Wheels of Peterborough under the organization’s umbrella—a move that would strengthen and grow the program for years to come.

“I was fortunate to work with some really great people,” Barb recalls. “We felt Meals on Wheels was a good program, and we were successful in getting quite a few people who were happy to deliver meals.”

After retiring, Barb continued volunteering in the Community Care office. She’s always believed in the value of the work—never imagining how much it would one day mean to her personally.

Today, Barb and her husband are recipients of the same service she once helped shape. “As a senior who no longer cooks, Meals on Wheels is necessary,” she says. “The food is nutritious and very tasty, and it’s always delivered by friendly, engaging people. I always have a chat with the person delivering the food—sometimes it’s even my cousin!”

Barb’s story is one of many that remind us how life can change—but the community we build together doesn’t have to. Her journey from Board President to Meals on Wheels client speaks to the enduring strength of a program rooted in care, connection, and continuity.

“I’ve used the program for several years now,” Barb says. “And I really like it.”
