This October, as we celebrate Community Support Month, we are honouring Marilyn McKenzie for her amazing dedication as a Meals on Wheels volunteer in Peterborough. Marilyn is retiring from the role she enjoyed for 53 years.
We recently spoke to Marilyn who reflected on her many years of volunteer service. A long-time resident of East City, Marilyn shared that she started volunteering with Community Care in 1970.
While many aspects changed over the years, she always found joy in meeting wonderful clients and working alongside other volunteers.
"I remember climbing up snowbanks and down again to deliver meals to clients," said Marilyn. "As long as clients were happy and looked after, that's all that mattered."
Marilyn enjoyed delivering meals alongside her childhood best friend who would drive, while Marilyn was the 'runner' to bring a meal to each client on their route. She also recruited her husband as a Meals on Wheels volunteer, upon his retirement from his work.
Marilyn's fond memories also include sharing laughs with her fellow volunteers and getting to know friendly clients. She even recalled sometimes receiving sweet treats from clients who were grateful for the volunteers.
It's no surprise that Marilyn was recognized many times over the years for her contributions to the community. Around her home she has several volunteer awards on display, including a Mayor's Award presented by the City of Peterborough in 2009, as well as several from Community Care Peterborough to acknowledge her years of service.
Later this month, Marilyn will be receiving an Ontario Volunteer Service Award. These awards recognize volunteers for their outstanding contributions and years of continuous service at not-for-profit organizations such Community Care Peterborough.

We thank you, Marilyn, for your incredible dedication as a volunteer with Community Care Peterborough. Congratulations on your retirement from this very important role!
