Volunteer Opportunities

In order to ensure that volunteers have a clear understanding of the various roles and responsibilities at Community Care, descriptions are available for each position. Clicking on the following positions will provide you with a brief description of each role. Full length position descriptions are available through your local office.

  • Blood Pressure Clinic

    • Assistant: provides assistance and support at the blood pressure clinic
    • Service Provider: checks and monitors participants’ blood pressure
      • set up and take down the clinic area as required
      • complete initial information form(s)
      • check and record participants’ blood pressure
      • refer at risk participants to appropriate health care professional and document in client’s file / record
      • provide participant with updated personal record
      • educate and provide reassurance about blood pressure as appropriate
      • arrange for a replacement if you are unable to fulfill your scheduled shift and inform appropriate staff member
      • complete and submit attendance record

    Note: Service providers must have a current or past registration in good standing with a recognized provincial College of Nursing or equivalent, which must be verified annually.

  • Diner's Club

    • Assistant: assists the diner's club convenor
    • Convenor: coordinates and facilitates diner’s club
      • plan and promote the diner's club
      • arrange transportation for participants with registered drivers as needed
      • take attendance and record new participant information
      • collect participant fees
      • ensure payment of meal provider
      • encourage social interaction among participants
      • assist with meal service and clean up
  • Foot Clinic

    • Receptionist: provides reception and clinical support
    • Service Provider: provides basic foot care
      • set up and take down clinic and reception area as required
      • welcome clients, and confirm and schedule appointments
      • manage and record cash transactions
      • complete initial and ongoing assessment of client health status
      • refer at risk clients to appropriate health care professional and document in client’s file / record
      • provide basic foot care and document in client file
      • ensure all equipment is sanitized before and after providing service
      • practice Standard Precautions and Infection Control Procedures

    Note: Service providers must have a current or past registration in good standing with a recognized provincial College of Nursing or equivalent, which must be verified annually. Specialized foot care training and / or experience is an asset.

  • Friendly Visiting

    • By Telephone: provides social interaction over the telephone
    • In Home: provides face to face social interaction
      • call / visit on a regular basis, preferable once per week
      • call the client if expected to be late or are unable to make arranged visit / call
  • Fundraising

    • Assists with fundraising activities
      • assist with the organization and / or implementation of events. Duties may include: soliciting donations, selling tickets, distributing promotional materials, handling of cash, recognition of contributors
  • Home Maintenance

    • Home Maintenance is provided by Brokered Workers. While workers receive fees for service, this is not the primary purpose of the program. A worker is not an employee of Community Care.
      • home maintenance may include: snow removal, lawn maintenance, minor repairs, etc
      • collect fees within the approved range
  • Home Making

    • Home Making is provided by Brokered Workers. While workers receive fees for service, this is not the primary purpose of the program. A worker is not an employee of Community Care.
      • home making may include: light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, grocery shopping, etc
      • collect fees within the approved range
  • Income Tax

    • Prepares basic income tax returns for individuals on a fixed income
      • attend annual Canada Revenue Agency training course offered through Community Care
      • complete returns accurately
      • ensure the safe keeping and confidentiality of documents
      • decline inappropriate / complex returns
  • Meals on Wheels

    • Assistant: provides support to meals on wheels drivers / runners
      • set out, clean and put away thermal bags
      • administrative support, which includes: providing special instructions, checking and recording freezer temperatures, filling walk in orders, handling cash, and keeping records
    • County Convenor: coordinates the provision of frozen meals
      • act as a liaison between volunteers and staff regarding unusual client conditions, concerns or changes
      • duties may include: calling clients each month for orders, preparing and submitting orders, ensuring the pickup, delivery and payment of meals, and handling cash
    • Driver / Runner: delivers meals
      • pick up bags, route sheets and meals, and deliver to clients
      • collect and record payment as needed
      • observe and monitor clients' well-being and report concerns to a staff member
      • report any unusual client conditions, concerns or changes to the Meals on Wheels Assistant or a staff member
    • Route Convenor: schedules drivers / runners to deliver hot and frozen meals in the City of Peterborough
      • ensure drivers / runners are scheduled for the route(s)
      • act as a liaison between volunteers and staff regarding scheduling changes, concerns or problems
  • Medical Equipment Loan Cupboard

    • Manages the medical equipment loan cupboard
      • maintain records and inventory, following up when necessary
      • organize loan cupboard area
      • follow the guidelines as set by the Agency’s Joint Health and Safety Committee
  • New to You

    • Convenor: coordinates the operation of the New to You store
    • Sales Person: assists with sales in the New to You store
      • assist with advertising, planning and promoting
      • follow the guidelines as set by the Agency’s Joint Health and Safety Committee
      • accept, sort, display and store New to You items
      • maintain a safe, neat clothing area
  • Office Support

    • Assists with the day to day operation of the office
      • provide information and referral to the community
      • may include: greeting, answering phones, retrieving messages, accepting / scheduling requests for meals, transportation and clinics, telephone reassurance calls, filing, photocopying, preparing outgoing mail, shredding, computer assignments, and assisting with clerical functions
  • Personal Distress Alarms

    • Technician installs and maintains Personal Distress Alarms
      • install and test Personal Distress Alarm in client’s home
      • demonstrate Personal Distress Alarm and review testing procedure with client
      • perform maintenance and battery changes as required
      • complete and submit all necessary paperwork and fees as soon as possible
      • clean and test returned units
      • basic mechanical/electrical skills an asset
  • Support Services Advisory Committee

    • Role of the Committee:
      • To provide leadership and support to Community Care local offices
      • To identify gaps in support services in the area served and make recommendations through the Board Liaison
      • To ensure that services provided in the community are maintained and enhanced
      • To support staff in their duties
    • Chair: leads and supports the work of the Committee
    • Member: participates in the work of the Committee
      • understanding of service activity, financial functions and budget process
      • support and assist with fundraising activities
      • be familiar with policies and procedures of the Agency
      • attend Agency Days and Annual General Meetings
      • represent Community Care at public functions and agency events as requested
      • be familiar with all Community Care services
      • regular attendance at meetings and training opportunities
      • support and assist with fundraising activities
      • expertise and / or knowledge in administration, finance, program / volunteer development, public relations or fundraising is an asset
  • Telephone Reassurance

    • Provides a telephone call for reassurance of client’s well being
      • call client(s) at assigned time
      • document each call
      • if client is not reached within two hours of arranged time, notify staff member immediately
  • Transportation

    • Driver: provides transportation for medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other activities associated with independent living
      • confirm travel arrangements with clients
      • provide confirmation / changes to license and insurance information
      • follow safe driving practices
      • provide minimal assistance (no lifting or transferring)
      • ensure your vehicle is in good working condition
      • collect fees unless otherwise advised
      • refer all client requests to the office
      • decline any requests that are not approved by the office
    • Scheduler: books drivers for transportation requests
      • review and organize transportation requests
      • call and schedule drivers
      • document and file arranged drives
      • assist Coordinator with other scheduling related tasks
