In early 1991, members of Peterborough County Community Care and the Peterborough Senior Citizens Council met to affirm continued working relationships and to examine similarities and differences in service delivery.

The Long Term Care Re-Direction Paper emphasizes cooperation, collaboration, and partnership within the community. In response to this, both PCCC and PSCC Boards endorsed a formal agreement to work towards the development of a new single agency. To accomplish this task an application to New Horizons was made and approved on February 20, 1992.

A number of tasks were undertaken - a meeting with funders to advise them of the Board's intent, a collection and review of information about 27 Councils on Aging recognized throughout Ontario, a proposed committee structure, and development of a mission statement and objectives.

An amalgamation agreement was signed by all parties in November 1992. A new name was selected and agreed upon - the Senior Citizens Council Peterborough - and a Board of Directors made up of ten people from the County and ten from the City was formed. Work began on the official documentation required for incorporation, and the letters patent were received and dated April 1, 1993.

We are unique in this community. We led the way in showing the community at large that amalgamations can work. It takes patience, compromise and goodwill on the part of the volunteers, clients and staff. We are able to serve the entire County much more effectively.

In 1998, as the result of a study done by the Ministry of Health, two services previously housed with another agency were transferred to us. Transportation and Friendly Visiting Service are provided by our agency now.

At the annual meeting in June 1999 the membership approved by-law changes. Our Board size was reduced from 20 to 17 and the name of the agency changed to Community Care Peterborough. The name more clearly reflects what we do. Considerable work had to be done on legal and other requirements to effect this change.

A Committee, with the assistance of Janus Designs, developed a new logo, slogan, brochure and other print materials, which were unveiled at an official launch on January 26, 2000.

The Executive Committee, and facilitator, Casey Ready, developed a mission, vision and guiding principles which the Board of Directors endorsed unanimously.

On April 1, 2004, Meals On Wheels Peterborough became a program of Community Care Peterborough. The transfer of this program in the City compliments the meal program already provided by Community Care in the County, and better serves our clients and the community.

Community Care Peterborough is a strong agency dependent on over 800 volunteers, who along with staff members, provide programs and services to seniors and adults with physical challenges in the County and City of Peterborough.
